A day at the doctor's office

Today Josh and I had doctor's appointments beginning with him at 8:00am. I'll start with his stats first. He's 15 months old and his head is in the 91% percentile, height 72% percentile, and weight 32% percentile. So, we need to fatten our little boy up. No need for me to feel bad giving my son fatty food like chicken nuggets and fries which he had for dinner tonight along with a vegetable, of course.

I asked the doctor several questions about milk since I recently have considered trying raw milk from a local farm. Since Josh turned one, we first gave him whole milk and he seemed pretty congested so we've been giving him lactose free whole milk ever since. He's congested again, so I'm kind of just wanting to try something new.

Last night I did a lot of reading on raw milk benefits and concerns. Many people (including most doctors) think that the disadvantages outway the benefits, but I'm not sure since we've never tried it. The biggest favor towards raw milk that I see is that's the way God invented it and people have been enjoying milk this way for thousands of years. So, why pasteurize?

He are some websites to check out if you're interested:

I also read someone else's blog and a court case over this:

The doctor recommended that we either try absolutely no milk for a week and see if his congestion clears up and/or try lots of milk and see if it gets worse or comes back. Knowing that we already have a life changing event happening in the next week, I just decided we're going to try goat's milk. Going completely all or no milk seems a little extreme for this next week. Goat's milk is supposedly easier to digest and has almost the same nutrional value. Hopefully the little guy will do well and enjoy this milk as much as the other. Time will tell.

Next, we came home, had a nap, lunch, played, walked, and headed off to my appointment. Josh did great as always. I'm so thankful that my doctor's office lets you bring kids and that he behaves well. Josh really enjoys looking at new people. And, I will never forget his expression the first time he heard Rachel's heartbeat. His face was filled with love and absolute amazement!

I'm 38.6 weeks pregnant and am 70% effaced and have dilated 2.5 cm. Rachel's been head down for a while with a heavy emphasis on the right side (meaning that side of me if more uncomfortable). Rachel is measuring right on and will hopefully make her appearance in the next week. Today's appointment got me really excited. And, she had a wonderful treat when we got home. My friend Kirsten shipped her a beautiful "flowered stroller blanket" from Pottery Barn that adds a sweet and delicate softness to her nursery. I can't believe that she will be here so soon.
